What is Bone Marrow?

Bone marrow is a semi-solid tissue which may be found within the spongy or cancellous portions of bones. In adult humans, bone marrow is primarily located in the ribs, vertebrae, sternum, and bones of the pelvis.

Bone marrow comprises approximately 5% of total body mass in healthy adult humans. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside your bones that makes blood-forming cells (blood stem cells). These cells turn into blood cells including:

1. White blood cells to fight infections.

2. Red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body.

3. Platelets to control bleeding.
   

What is Bone Marrow Transplant?

A bone marrow transplant is also called a stem cell transplant. It is a treatment for some types of cancer. You might have bone marrow transplant, if you have leukemia, multiple myeloma, or lymphoma.

In the past, a stem cell transplant was more commonly called a bone marrow transplant because the stem cells were collected from the bone marrow. Today, stem cells are usually collected from the blood, instead of the bone marrow. For this reason, they are now often called stem cell transplants.

What Diseases can BMT Treat?

Bone marrow transplants can treat:

1. Blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma

2. Bone marrow diseases like aplastic anemia

3. Other immune system or genetic diseases like sickle cell disease.

Why Bone marrow is important?

A part of your bones called “bone marrow” makes blood cells. Marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside bones. It contains cells called “hematopoietic” stem cells. These cells can turn into several other types of cells. They can turn into more bone marrow cells.

Certain cancers and other diseases keep hematopoietic stem cells from developing normally. If they are not normal, neither are the blood cells that they make. A stem cell transplant gives you new stem cells. The new stem cells can make new, healthy blood cells.
